Although Schottky diodes have been on the market for decades, new developments and products have continuously enhanced its characteristics and expanded the possibility of application. In addition to solar panels and cars, they are now also used as battery chargers for laptops, smartphones and tablets. But which Schottky diodes are suitable for what purpose?
Schottky diodes are mainly used in the following two fields:
1. Rectification, in other words, AC to DC conversion and DC voltage conversion within a switching power supply (SMPS) or power rectifier.
2. Prevent the reverse flow of DC current and DC of opposite polarity, for example, when the battery is inserted incorrectly.
Due to its high switching speed, Schottky diodes are mainly used for high frequency applications up to the microwave range. This is also due to their low saturation capacity. Therefore, they are usually used as protection diodes for reducing the induced voltage in the form of freewheeling diodes or rectifier diodes in switching power supplies, and can also be used as demodulators for detection circuits.
Why do some diodes have three disciplines?
Some diode external image triodes used for full wave rectification are packaged with two diodes connected in reverse (the negative electrodes are connected together). Generally, the middle is the negative electrode, so as to save space and make the circuit board more compact.
